Northwest 100, Emporia State 61

Northwest Missouri State University left no doubt who the superior team was in the opening moments of Wednesday night's quarterfinal round matchup against Emporia State in the MIAA Tournament.

The Bearcats (22-1) jumped out to a 24-5 lead in the first half on their way to steamrolling the Hornets 100-61.

When Trevor Hudgins sank a three-pointer with time running out in the first half, the Northwest lead sat at 60-19. The No. 1 Bearcats shot a ridiculous 72.4-percent in the opening 20 minutes, and 64.7-percent from three.

As the second half began, the lead only grew.

Hudgins and Ryan Hawkins hit layups to increase the advantage to 64-19 once play resumed, forcing Emporia State to call a timeout just 45 seconds into the second half.

The lead grew to 50 points with 7:36 remaining when Daric Laing hit a three to make it 93-43.

Northwest was led by Hudgins, the MIAA Player of the Year, with 31 points on 11-15 shooting. He was also 7-10 from three-point range. The junior guard also passed out 5 assists with no turnovers in 29 minutes of action.

Hawkins, a First Team All-MIAA selection, put up 25 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists.

Diego Bernard showed why he received MIAA Defensive Player of the Year honors grabbing four steals in the opening 17 minutes of the game. The St. Joseph, MO native finished with 18 points on 7-7 shooting, nine rebounds, and two assists.

Northwest advances to the semifinal round of the MIAA Tournament Friday evening. The Bearcats will meet Central Oklahoma with a berth in the championship game on the line. Northwest took the only regular season meeting from UCO 90-68.

Game time is set for 5pm, with pregame beginning at 4:30pm on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9.
